The large village of Cheam lies in the London Borough of Sutton but was historically in the county of Surrey. Divided into two distinct regions, North Cheam and Cheam village, the area has access to a number of parks, including Cheam Park and Nonsuch Park. The first race meeting in the town was on Saturday 24th August 1839 with a card consisting of Matches, Hurdle races and a Galloway race. By 1843 the meeting on Wednesday 30th August, entitled North Cheam Races, was held in the grounds of the Lord Nelson, where an Ordinary was also served after racing. Racing continued annually until the final meeting on Tuesday 23rd September 1851. In 1862 a further meeting was held in conjunction with Wimbledon and Kingston. |
